Adderall-Dosages and formulations

One of the widely prescribed drugs in the United States for treating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders and Narcolepsy (day time drowsiness), Adderall is not meant for increasing performance. Those who have ADHD have an inactive prefrontal cortex (an area in the brain that controls attention span).
Hence, when they take CNS stimulants like Adderall, the drug increases the
concentration of “feel-good” neurotransmitter known as dopamine in the
reward center of the brain. Which, in turn, calms the nerves and helps the
patients feel alert and attentive.

What is Adderall?

It is a brand name for the combination of Amphetamine/dextroamphetamine. It belongs to a class of drugs known as (CNS) Central Nervous System stimulants. This FDA prescribed medicine is beneficial for treating ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Besides, it stimulates the brain and
natural chemicals inside it.

Adderall Dosages:

As discussed, doctors prescribe Adderall for treating ADHD or narcolepsy
exclusively. Look for the ADHD symptoms you or your children may have.
ADHD affects children typically and grows gradually, but that does not mean adults remain unaffected. A recently conducted study has shown that ADHD medications prescribed to the children increased by 45% from 2002 to 2010. Children above the age of 5 taking Adderall for ADHD should start with 5 mg and increase the dose gradually to 30 mg.

Formulation and strengths of Adderall

An adult dose for narcolepsy also starts from 5 mg and goes up to 60 mg. The drug is available in extended-release and immediate-release forms. In a four- hour or immediate-release formulation, Adderall is available in 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, 20, and 3 mg, whereas the Adderall XR is available in 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 mg strengths.

The dosage of Adderall varies with the weight, age, and severity of the
disease. Hence, to confirm the dose suitable for you, you need to consult a
doctor. It is available in generic form, but one should never take it without
diagnosis and prescription.

What Does Adderall Do When You Have ADHD?

Methylphenidate works by increasing the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain.
Some people claim that Adderall makes them focus, but it is actually in their
minds. Furthermore, researchers believe that the drug has a high placebo
effect, and therefore it tells people that they are focused and alert. Adderall has a calming effect on the brain and nerves. Research work done
on more than 40 studies found that though the drug is an effective cure for
ADHD, it does not have any significant impact on those who do not have ADHD.

A Word of Caution:

Do not take Methylphenidate if you do not have ADHD. It does not sharpen any skills
or improve productivity but makes you feel so. However, consult with a
physician if you need this treatment.
